Gift To A Fallen Friend
I was looking into "The disturbance of air" when I decided to focus on wings.
Wings were used as the first hand held fans 5000 years ago.
They are also designed so perfectly to glide through the air.
One evening as I came home from college I found a Pigeons wing, isolated from the rest of its body, on the road.
I decided to dedicate 2 solid weeks of piercing brass and soldering over 200 payeux to this fallen friend from the sky.
I put the real wing aside, but I never saw it agian it was taken by an unknown mover.
Here Gift To a Fallen Friend becomes an extension of the arm.
Humans have always desired this appendage.
I made a handle and dressed it in black velvet, to mirror the softness of the feathers.
The feathers themselves are made from brass.
I have retained the patinated quality as I did not want it to look new and shiny.
I want it to reflect the passing of the bird, the remainder of his physical body that will eventually waste away.
Here the wing is used in performance as a shield.
It has also been performed with as a body extension, producing sensual dances, and as a fan.
