Karen Richmond
* 'At an Angle' South Bank London:
BA Hons 3D Design Subject Leader
Position
Karen is currently the Course Leader for the BA hons in 3D Design at Camberwell College of Art, (University of the Arts London). She is engaged in a practice and theory based
PhD? at The Bartlett School of Architecture, (University College London) and in the year 2000 received an MA in Design Products from the Royal College of Art. In 1996 she graduated from Kingston University with a BA Hons in Sculpture.
Within her practice Karen is interested in the potential of designing objects which have an strong emotional element to their function. This has led to the creation of families of objects and interventions.
An example of this work is a piece entitled ‘The Smile Enhancer’ which invites two people to exchange their smile with each another. Another piece seeks to give the user their ‘own piece of sky’ through a wearable unit attached to the shoulders. Her work engages the user in a potentially new set of narratives creating questions around pre-existing functions, the language of object and our relationships to them. A permanent piece in the form of a ‘step-up’ concrete structure is positioned adjacent to the Oxo Tower, London and is entitled ‘At an Angle’ It invites people walking along the Thames Path to step up and view their environment at a different angle.
