As consumers seek out alternatives to the mass-produced, generic, 'global' product, demand is growing for the one-off, hand-made or small batch object - the work of the designer-maker - which can express our personal identities and anticipate social trends.
This course explores the creative possibilities of fusing the design process with intellectual ideas and the experience of making by hand. Through the creation of one-off and batch-produced artefacts, practising designer-makers will encourage you to explore the ideas and meanings underlying objects, and develop your own individual approaches to research, designing and making. Your visual and critical awareness will be sharpened through staff-led and self-managed projects, and interlinked programmes.
Course structure.
The programme of study over three years will enable you to develop basic and specialist skills, and refine your ideas and sensibilities. You'll gain the experience and understanding of a range of materials and processes that will allow you to create high quality one-off or batch-produced artefacts in a variety of media. The combination of studio/workshop-based projects will develop your critical abilities, research skills and aesthetic judgment. These are supported by tutorials, subject-specific seminars and lectures.
