Jewellery is an object which many consider to be extremely valuable. This value isnt normally because of the material and cost of it but more because of its sentimental value. I wanted to create jewellery which would wrap around the persons body so it would fit only that particular individual. The challenge was finding a material which the person could use themselves to create their own jewellery.Through research,I discovered ThermoPlastics. A plastic which can be reused again and again. You boil it and then it is soft enough to mold around anything,in this case what you believe to be your distinctive bodily features. This also brought up an interesting question of whether or not it was possible to make something so sentimental and precious such as jewellery out of the worlds greatest mass produced material, plastic.

I like the idea of being able to manipulate this material and the fact that the person could change the jewellery if they got bored of it.I am interested in making the packaging out of Thermoplastic also.So that the packet would be boiled to create the jewellery. This led me onto to the idea of creating ecofriendly packaging.Using dissolvable paper for the instructions also ties in nicely with the idea of this being a very neat,no waste design.

See www.madeira.co.uk to find out about dissolvable threads, fabric and paper!!

The images of human anatomy below show my starting point. From taking photographs and making casts of peoples necks, wrists etc I was able to explore the small differences in our bodies which makes us so different.I felt this to be an important part in understanding the concept of jewellery wrapping around a persons body and what is it that makes having jewellery fitted only for one particular individual special.

Copper mesh was a material that I looked at initially because it was so flexible and fabric like.It was a material which one could wrap around themsleves but the problem I found with this was that I was unable to allow the individual to control this material.I didn’t feel it could be personalized enough by the person who wanted to create their jewellery.

Thermoplastic was the perfect material to carry out what i wanted to achieve. A material which can be molded into any shape,in this case which can fit any body feature.I also liked the fact that it can be changed when reboiling it.Giving the individual the freedom to alternate their jewellery and design it anyway they wish. plastic.jpg
