Multiples With A Soul

Links

Having a strong interest in the method, form and function of objects i began this project by looking at the construction of the envelope, well many envelopes. I 'percentagised' each section of the whole, giving me the ability to construct any envelope of any size. at this point i was not sure where the project was headed but felt the the more practical research i collected concerning the envelopes as objects the better off i would be. i like to work obsessively and rather than attaching a 'soul' to the envelopes i found their 'soul'within their individual construction

percentage: (measurement / total) x 100

application

new total : (chosen measurement x 100) / percentage of chosen measurement

new measurments: (new total / 100) x percentages

my research was not limited to the mathmatics of the envelopes i collected stamps of sent envelopes and the interiors. this i found became an obsessive task. i started the collection unaware as to how many there were to collect, i now open my post more excited to see the interior than the contents

with this in mind i wanted to convert the numerical information into a visual pattern;an envelope interior which would be personal to each envelope and a reflection of its own construction rather than a tool for the company using it (alliance and leicester use an interior with their own logo). to do this i converted my percentages into degrees (by this point i had managed to obtain a calculator, rather than using my mobile phones excuse for a calculator)

degrees: (360 / total percentages) x percentage

with my information converted to degrees i was able to create a pattern in the form of a pie chart. i however steered clear of the geography style (colouring pencils and all) sticking to clean lines. i wanted the pattern to represent the information, the'soul' appropriately as i started mathmatically i felt i should continue in this manner. there was also the was a matter of design, i had to compromise the pie charts ability to be interpreted. yet i feel the information and at least the idea are visualised successfully

in conjuction with this i began thinking about a more interactive envelope related product. on my foundation course i had designed a wallpaper triggering a reaction for someone with a fear of clothes. since that point i began to look at wallpaper in different light. i had enjoyed manipulating wallpaper and had wanted to return to it since, this seemed like an ideal oppotunity. i had been concerntrating on patterns etc which got me thinking of wallpaper again; perhaps using the envelopes interiors as a wallpaper pattern. when tackling my sketch (an object i have a love/hate relationship with, i have an inabilty to be messy with my work some might say i have a touch of ocd)i wanted to represent the reseach i had done in a beautiful and demonstrative way (see pic 2 at top of page. rather than sticking the envelopes i had created from the percenatges i decided to create them within the sketch book. combining my need to create wallpaper and my sketch book construction seemed ideal.

the wallpaper is not designed just to look nice, it serves a function and can be interacted with. the envelopes would come pre-cut and the owner has the opptunity to costruct whichever ones they chose determining the pattern. again the owner can apply this wallpaper to any pre-exising wallpaper/ surface the pattern of which will be seen through the cut outs. the interaction would continue as the owner puts the envelopes to use as containers/ storage.
